Ideas should be useful enough to change what you do.
My writing explores a recurring question: Why do some capable people translate their potential into effective performance while others do not?
The answer touches competence, behaviour, psychology, experience, entrepreneurship, leadership and the environments in which we work.
Competence Redefined: The intellectual framework and methodology designed to make human capability and professional performance practical.
Business in the Blood: An exploration of the human complexities, family dynamics, identity, and legacy behind entrepreneurial enterprises.
The framework behind my work on human capability and performance. The Competence Refined framework and methodology.
Competence Refined was written to make competence practical.
The book examines the different elements that contribute to effective performance and provides a framework for understanding where development may be required. Its purpose is not simply academic. It is designed to improve the way individuals and organisations think about capability, development and performance.
Useful for:
- Individuals interested in professional development
- What is holding them back;
- Managers responsible for developing people
- Business owners building stronger teams
- HR and people professionals
- Coaches and leadership practitioners
- Organisations seeking clearer performance conversations
Business is rarely just business when the family is involved.
Business in the Blood belongs naturally within my work with entrepreneurs and business owners because it recognises the human being behind the enterprise.
There are a myriad of human complexities in an entrepreneurial and family enterprise. Factors such as identity, relationships, succession, responsibilities, expectations, decision-making, and legacy are all addressed in this book.
Discussing family businesses:
- Building a business is deeply personal. In a family business, it becomes part of the family too.
- Business and family roles often overlap. This can create both strength and tension.
- Business in the Blood explores the people behind the family enterprise.
- It looks at relationships, trust, conflict, leadership and succession.
- It fits naturally with my work with entrepreneurs and family businesses.
- Strong family businesses need strong relationships. They also need clear roles and honest communication.
- Business is about numbers, markets and strategy. But it is also about people.
- It requires judgement, resilience, responsibility and shared purpose.
Key ideas from my books complement one another:
Competence Refined discusses how people become increasingly capable and perform, and Business in the Blood focuses on how business, identity, family and entrepreneurship intersect.
Competence Refined becomes the intellectual framework behind my work, while Business in the Blood strengthens the entrepreneur and business-owner side of my positioning.
